If it starts without the stator but not with it, it is drag from the iron filings or a stator fault but you would feel that when turning it by hand. If it still fails to start, remove the stator but with your arrangement you may get some cogging from the magnets attracting your stator supports. If your hub has ball rather than taper bearings, make sure the bearings are not pre loaded against each other. Reduce the amount of grease and make sure the bearings are slightly slack and try again. If your iron filings are effective you will probably worsen the performance with iron loss and by causing it to run into stall but I still think it ought to work quite well. If you followed the design exactly it is a super little machine and couldn't be improved much. I can't be sure how well you have made the prop but if you have followed Hugh's dimensions it should be fine. If those bearings are taper roller, use grease sparingly and only hand tighten the nut and make sure you can feel a bit of slack in the bearings, there is not a lot of power in a 4 ft prop to get it going, but when it is right it should start at about 5 mph although it may take a while to bed in. If you filled the holes in the centre of the coils with iron filings then I would expect trouble. I doubt that the iron filings are holding it back much at starting as long as they are a plain disc at the back. Seems like it is Hugh's little 4 ft machine with iron filings added to the back of the stator. we have not built the tower yet, but we are looking to design a very interesting tower which fits into a farm type enviroment. tin from a barn roof of the tail, wooden barn siding for the tower and blades, old tractor cable for the guy wires, etc. almost all of the materials we will use for the tower and have used for the turbine are found materials. we would like it to start spinning in lower winds so maybe larger blades would do the trick? the bearing system is a four stud trailor hub, which was purchaced new so maybe once that breaks in the turbine will turn easiler.Īs i said this was our first turbine to produce electricity, but we are also interested in its sculptural qualities. I carved the blades with a sharp axe and a belt sander from a 2 by 6, and although all three look very similar, my primitive tools may account for the high start up speed. we used #15 magnet wire, as recommended in Hugh's wind turbine plans for a 12 volt system, but perhaps we should have use finer wire for a 24 or 48 volt system? there are laminates behind the coils, but what i'm starting to realizes is the relationship between average wind speed and coil windings, as you all have stated. This was our first turbine so we're learning as we go along. i guess i misused the term "cut in speed." I'm not sure how big our battery bank will be but perhaps 2 6 volt batteries. at 15 mph the multimeter read about 1 volt. i guess what i meant by cut in speed was the speed at which the turbine started turning and producing voltage.
